Problem Statement

Despite significant advancements in medical technology, diabetes management products have largely retained bulky designs and limited functionalities reminiscent of early automated pumps. In a world where personal presentation can significantly impact professional and social interactions, diabetics often find themselves compromised by conspicuous and cumbersome devices. The challenge was to create a solution that not only improves the functional aspects of diabetes management but also addresses the psychological and social factors affecting users' quality of life.

Solution Overview

Bolus represents a holistic approach to diabetes management, seamlessly blending cutting-edge technology with contemporary fashion sensibilities. By integrating advanced interfaces and adopting a slim, modern design aesthetic, we've developed a product that allows diabetes patients to manage their condition discreetly and efficiently. Bolus is more than just an insulin pump; it's a comprehensive system that empowers users to maintain their lifestyle without compromise. The connected, low-profile, adaptable, and modular pump system, controllable via smartphone, marks a significant leap forward in wearable medical devices.

Design Process

The Bolus project was conceived and executed during SCAD's intense UX Start Up design sprint, spanning just one week. Our interdisciplinary team, comprising experts in UX design, industrial design, and photography, embarked on a rapid but thorough design journey. We began with extensive research into the diabetic community, focusing specifically on pump users. This initial phase involved both primary and secondary research methods, including user interviews, market analysis, and technology reviews. Based on our findings, we identified key pain points and opportunities for innovation. The ideation phase followed, where we brainstormed and conceptualized various solutions. Through an iterative process of sketching, prototyping, and user testing, we refined our ideas, ultimately arriving at the Bolus smart belt concept. The final days of the sprint were dedicated to developing a functional prototype and preparing our pitch for the SCAD Start-Up competition.

User Experience Design

The user experience was at the forefront of our design process. We focused on creating an intuitive interface that would minimize the cognitive load on users while managing their condition. The smartphone app was designed with simplicity in mind, featuring large, easy-to-read displays of crucial information such as current glucose levels and insulin dosage. The integration of voice commands through Siri allows users to manage their diabetes hands-free, a feature particularly useful during physical activities or in professional settings. Smart notifications were carefully crafted to be informative yet non-intrusive, striking a balance between alerting users to important changes in their condition and avoiding alarm fatigue.

Industrial Design

The physical design of the Bolus smart belt was a critical component of the project. Our goal was to create a device that was not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and comfortable for all-day wear. We explored various materials and manufacturing techniques to achieve a slim profile without compromising on durability or functionality. The modular design allows for easy replacement of components such as the insulin cartridge and battery, enhancing the product's longevity and user-friendliness. Special attention was paid to the belt's closure mechanism, ensuring it was secure yet easy to operate, even for users with reduced dexterity.

Market Analysis

01Projected USA insulin pump market: US $5 Billion by the end of 2022
02Estimated CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) market: US $2 Billion
03Average cost of current pumps: US $5,500
04Projected US diabetic population: 33 Million by the end of 2022
05Existing pump users as of 2016: 5 million
06Potential for significant market disruption and expansion due to improved user experience and lifestyle integration
